The academic job market is opaque by design.
A committee scans a cover letter in under two minutes. If they do not find what they need in those first seconds, the rest goes unread. Nobody tells you what they are looking for, which is why strong candidates fail on presentation.

Melanie Sindelar is an academic writing coach and founder of the EMERGE Scholars Collective, where 200+ researchers across Europe write together.
She works directly with PhDs, postdocs, and early career researchers on their publications and job market materials. This course is built from that direct experience, not from generic career coaching frameworks.
The course content is rooted in the same material Melanie uses in her ongoing work with researchers inside the EMERGE Support Room.

Why this price: twelve hours of content, six workbooks, four live Q&A sessions and Support Room access — €79 a month on its own, with co-writing sessions and a facilitated planning session included — adds up past €649 before the course content is even counted. Comparable European group programmes for researchers run €1,190 for six sessions; US cohort programmes run $2,000–5,000; document editing at the best-known US provider runs $250 an hour, which puts VIP's document feedback in $600–1,000 territory on its own.

When does the course run?
The cohort runs 21 September to 3 November 2026. Modules are released week by week as recordings, with a welcome session, four live Q&A calls and a wrap-up alongside them. Cart opens 8 September and closes 19 September.
Can I pay in instalments?
Yes. The VIP payment plan (three payments of €590) is arranged when you apply.
Is there support if I can't afford it?
One or two reduced places at 50% are held for unfunded or precarious scholars, by short application. In return, we ask for an extensive testimonial and the option to invite you to a short interview on a future webinar. Write to info@melaniesindelar.com to apply.
Some of my deadlines fall before the cover letter module. Is the order fixed?
Yes, the module order follows the logic of building your application, and we are not reordering it. For German and Austrian professorships and project-funded posts specifically, mid-October cover letter work is well-timed, not late. If your deadline lands earlier, bring your materials to a live Q&A session or the Support Room ahead of the module — VIP participants get written feedback regardless of where the cohort is in the curriculum.
What happens if I miss a VIP feedback deadline?
Submit by Friday noon and feedback comes back by Tuesday. It is one round per document, so a missed week is gone rather than carried forward — that is what keeps the turnaround reliable for everyone in the five VIP places.
I'm early in my PhD and not applying yet. Is this still relevant for me?
Yes, and in some ways more so. Understanding how the market works before you're in the middle of an active cycle gives you time to make better decisions about your research agenda, your publications strategy, and how you build your profile. The earlier you have this picture, the more options you have.
How is this different from generic career coaching?
This course is built specifically for early career researchers in the European academic context, not for job seekers in general. The content is grounded in direct experience working with PhDs and postdocs on their actual application materials, and it addresses the specific structures, expectations, and realities of European hiring. There is no productivity advice, no mindset content, and no generic frameworks.
I'm applying to positions outside Europe. Is this still useful?
The course is built around the European context specifically: hiring cycles, committee structures, CV conventions, and cover letter expectations that differ from the US and other markets. If you're applying primarily outside Europe, some of the content will transfer but the course may not be the right fit. If you're applying to both European and non-European positions, it's likely still relevant for a significant part of your search.
I already have a CV and cover letter. Will I still get value from this?
Almost certainly. Having materials is different from having materials that are working. The most common situation I see is researchers who have a CV and cover letter they've been using for one or more cycles without understanding why they're not landing interviews. The course is designed to help you evaluate your own materials more critically and identify what needs to change, not to start from scratch.
