Planning to write an article this summer? Read this first.

The semester is coming to an end, and you're probably exhausted.

You're wrapping up your teaching, grading piles of exams, attending final meetings, and trying to tie up a hundred loose ends before everyone disappears for the summer.

And then, finally:

Summer.

This big container of rest, restoration, and uninterrupted time to finally focus on your intellectual pursuits. It sounds dreamy.

Maybe you already made a promise to yourself: "This is the summer where I'm finally going to finish and submit that article".

Which article, you ask? The one that has been sadly sitting as a chaotic draft in your folder titled "Article Ideas".

Perhaps it's a conference paper that never became a manuscript, or a dissertation chapter that still needs to be turned into a journal article.

And summer seems like the perfect opportunity to finally get it done.

But here's the uncomfortable truth:

If you don't understand why the article didn't get finished during the academic year, there's a good chance it won't get finished during the summer either.

Most unfinished articles are not the result of being too busy.

They're usually not caused by a lack of discipline.

And they're certainly not caused by a lack of ability. After all, you've written and published before.

As an academic writing coach, I've seen the same patterns over and over again.

Most stalled articles are stuck because of a handful of specific, identifiable problems.

Problems that can be diagnosed, and problems that can be solved.

That's exactly why I'm running a free workshop next week.

Five Reasons Your Article Isn't Published Yet

(And What to Do About It This Summer)

In this one-hour session, we'll look at the five most common reasons academics get stuck and how to identify which one is holding your article back.

You'll leave with:

✓ A clear diagnosis of your primary obstacle

✓ A practical first step you can take immediately

✓ A framework for making meaningful progress this summer

Date: 11 June 2026

Time: 14:00 CET

Format: Live online workshop

Cost: Free

If you've been telling yourself that this summer will finally be the summer you submit that article, I'd love for you to join us.

Sign up here to get registered for the workshop.

See you there,

Melanie

P.S. If you know a colleague who has been talking about the same unfinished article for the last two summers, feel free to forward this email to them. They might need it even more than you do.

Before you use AI to grade this semester, read this
We are in the thick of grading season, and for many academics the temptation is obvious: paste a paragraph into ChatGPT, ask for a quick summary, generate draft feedback, and move on. But here is the part many people have missed: under the EU AI Act, AI systems intended to evaluate learning outcomes are listed as high-risk. That does not mean every use of AI in teaching is banned, but it does m...
What the newest higher ed report has to do with your writing
Hi everyone, I have been thinking a lot about the recent King’s College London report on the funding crisis in European universities. The report looks at something many of us already feel in our everyday academic lives: universities are under pressure. Student numbers are rising in many places, public funding per student is not keeping up, working conditions are getting worse, and academics are...
Is Europe really a “greener pasture” for academic jobs?
Hi,  I recently read an article in Times Higher Education titled “Surge in interest in European jobs despite ‘structural barriers’”. It describes how several European countries are actively trying to attract international researchers, especially from the US. Given what’s happening in the US, this isn’t surprising: Entire subjects are being closed at colleges Academic freedom is under increa...
